Bush, Romney, and the planet

AS AN American person of faith attending the UN's Conference on Climate Change in Montreal, I am ashamed by President Bush and his administration's claim that the science surrounding climate change is ''inconclusive."

I am also astounded by Governor Romney's recent push to allow the state's worst polluters to continue pumping out harmful emissions for the tiny fee of $10 per ton.

In so doing, Romney is effectively pulling Massachusetts out of the progressive nine-state agreement to reduce emissions (''Romney is said to plan limits on polluter funds," Page A1, Dec. 7). I see such policies and unwillingness to act to counter climate change as morally reprehensible.

There were more than 10,000 people at this global conference -- most of whom deeply care that our planet is spinning toward irrevocable damage in the light of human-induced climate change.

I stand in solidarity with the Inuit youth whose ice sheets are melting, the Kenyan women whose farms are now deserts, and the flooded victims of Katrina. Our collective voice says to Bush and Romney -- awake, see the truth, and act.
