THE ARTICLE ''Church tackles $46m gap" (April 20, Page 1) on the finances of the archdiocese is nothing short of derelict and misleading. There is but one universal Catholic Church that has no known financial woes and undoubtedly trillions in assets. Although the article itself did focus on our local Archdiocese of Boston, it failed to wade through the intricacies of local church financial worth. It failed to include the local hospitals, colleges, etc. It also failed to consider the assets of the religious orders and groups operating within the diocese. It is unfortunate the Church chooses to hide behind the legal fiction of local incorporation rather than its own claim to being both one and universal. If there truly is but one Catholic Church under the rule of the pope, we should not have to worry about adequately compensating clergy sex abuse victims or the closing of parishes.
Holy smoke and mirrors!
