Lexington and discord

I HAVE been very concerned reading of the controversies about teaching diversity in Lexington, a town where, it can be assumed, some well-educated people live (''Parents rip school over gay storybook," City & Region, April 20). One parent was quoted as saying her child was ''only 7" and shouldn't be learning about families headed by same-sex couples. My daughter is 9 and has known about gay and lesbian couples and parents since birth.

How? Simply because we have gay friends, many of whom have adopted or birthed children and are parenting them with love and skill. In addition, I work for and with gay people.

Maybe if that Lexington parent and others who feel as she does weren't so isolated from the real world, their children wouldn't grow up to be as ignorant.
