Wrong formula for new mothers
SO WHAT DID Governor Romney accomplish with rescinding the ban on formula gift packs to new mothers (``State allows gifts of formula for infants," City & Region, May 24 )? Is he guaranteeing a healthier beginning for infants? Is he encouraging a healthier lifestyle in which nursing mothers eat better to support nursing? Will there be more health education for expectant mothers? The answer is no. This move solely provides product placement and implied product endorsement from the healthcare facility -- a move that virtually assures continued purchase of this ``gift."
The choice to bottle feed or breast-feed her baby has been made long before a woman leaves the maternity ward.
If anything, this move reinforces the alternative when a breast-feeding mother has a problem that could be easily resolved by appropriate support that doesn't come from a can.
To the hospitals that have and will discontinue the ``free gift" of formula, keep up the good work!
