I'VE BEEN following the gay rights movement since I was in middle school, and here are a few things that have really stuck out to me about the debate over the marriage amendment:
Why is a majority voting on a minority's rights?
Why doesn't the state constitution protect all citizens' rights?
Marriage equality hasn't hurt anyone; why change it now?
My mother and father divorced when I was 4 years old, when my mother concluded that she was in love with another woman. My mother has been with this same woman now for 15 years.
My now-stepmother has helped me create a great start for my own independence and has helped my development as much as my biological father has, if not more.
Even voting to have this measure on the ballot is a form of discrimination. This country is supposed to be fighting to end discrimination worldwide, and it can't even end discrimination at home.
What kind of message does this send to the world? Not a very good one, in my opinion.
