THANKS TO activist Vincent Zarrilli for drawing our attention to the high number of accidents in the Tip O'Neill Tunnel ("Number of accidents in Big Dig tunnel spurs an investigation," City & Region, July 24).
As an infrequent user, I am surprised the number is not even higher.
The traffic lanes and signage apparently were designed without regard for Boston drivers. For example, many cars cannot get to the airport without several lane changes. The signs are adequate for the middle of the night, but in heavy, high-speed traffic, it is impossible to change lanes without taking risks.
It is worse if you are unfamiliar with the tunnel, and slow down to figure out the signs. The speeding cars next to you prevent any lane change at all, while those behind blow their horns and try to get around you.
So, if you need to end up at the airport instead of Quincy, an accident is very likely.
