Sundays spent at the Basement

I WAS bemused by the memories of so many people, including our own Mayor Menino, spending their Sundays shopping in Filene's Basement ("Closing leaves shoppers down in the Basement," City & Region, Sept. 4).

Given that for years the infamous blue laws prevented shopping in Boston department stores on Sundays, these memories hardly qualified these people as true longtime Basement aficionados.

But their comments did make me a little sentimental - not for the Basement, but for those days when you went downtown on Sundays for church, a meal, or recreation only. Boy, do I feel old.
