Leaves, lawns, and their discontents

SOMEONE MUST have a lot of time on his hands to worry about the pollution from leaf blowers, as described in the Oct. 11 Short Fuse editorial "Jet Skis of the backyard." I happen to own one, which helps me move the enormous amount of leaves that fall from the many oak trees on my property. It is a great convenience, and I would not be happy if I had to give it up. But I'll tell you what: I'll drop my leaf blower and pick up a rake when everyone with a gas-powered lawn mower reverts to the old handheld rotary lawn mower. After all, there are far more gas-powered lawn mowers emitting noise and pollution than there are leaf blowers.
