Baseball fandom grows deep in Rockies

"FICKLE IN the Rockies," (Editorial, Oct. 23) is about the baseball tradition, winning the World Series, and attendance figures. The editorial also suggests there is little big time baseball tradition in Denver, which is incorrect.

Having grown up in Denver when the Denver Bears were the New York Yankees Triple A franchise, I can attest to watching teams capable of beating most other big league teams other than their parent team.

The Denver Bears of my memory were owned by Bob Howsam, managed by Ralph Houk, and manned by the likes of Ralph Terry, John Blanchard, Bobby Richardson, Woody Held, Marv Throneberry, Don Larson, Norm Seibern, et al. Unlike the image of Marvelous Marv Throneberry when he played for the hapless Mets, I remember him as a power-hitting, good-fielding first baseman. Even the great Casey Stengel was dragged down by his days managing the Mets.

I have been looking forward to a World Series that pits my two real home towns - and now I have it. Red Sox in 6!
