The first reader response to the blog
Eric Steinert receives the dubious distinction for being the first reader on Sunday to send a comment about the new blog.
So, here's Eric's feedback:
Hi - I applaud the globe's efforts in launching a
blog...you'll increase transparency and can use the
experience to make adjustments to how the globe itself
can shed the dino image it has...
for instance, today's front page piece on prep school
pay...what's the point? salaries soar for academy
heads...like so what? what's the relevance? why try so
hard to steer for the controversial...especially when
there's not a news item in site, like for miles...then
Peter's quote at the end - (taught my sister history
at JBS)...if you're going there you might as well
disclose to the reader how many andover grads work at
the paper...that might qualify for some controversy!

...by the way, not a good idea to launch a blog that's
not in real time, or ready for prime time - but super
to wade in to the pool.
Thanks, Eric. I've invited the story's reporter to offer a response if she wishes.
But on the point about real time, I explained to Eric that this particular version of Movable Type - the blogging program that the Globe uses - does not allow real-time comments to be posted. Yes, I know that other blogging programs allow for real-time comments, and if this version doesn't seem to work well for us and readers, then we may consider switching to another platform.
For now, I have mixed feelings about posting real-time comments. On the one hand, I think readers should be able to post their comments immediately; on the other hand, we (Mary and I) have to be realistic about the volume of comments that could be posted here and how well we can manage that.
We're keeping an open mind on this. We hope you do, too.
