Immigration Stall

The House is slamming on the brakes: calling for more hearings on immigration reform. The Federation for American Immigration Reform is praising the move, saying the House leadership is reaching out to give the public a chance to be heard.

But it has been clear for years that reform is needed. Holding hearings seems like a delaying tactic.

Will enough voters demand real action on the issue? Maybe. July 1 will be the launch date for Democracy Summer, a national effort to “show the power of the immigrant vote” by encouraging one million people to become registered voters or apply for citizenship before Election Day, 2006.
