Garth Stewart (left), an Iraq war veteran, demonstrated the first powered ankle foot prosthesis prototype Monday at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The invention was created by the Biomechatronics Group at the MIT Media Lab, headed by professor Hugh Herr (right). Herr, a double amputee, was wearing the only other prototype. The prosthesis propels users forward with tendon-like springs and an electric motor.
