Albert Pierrepoint hanged Nazis, common murderers, and more than a few American GIs. He also believed that a hanging should be done humanely.

EVEN THE VILEST war criminal should be put to death quickly and humanely, in the opinion of Field Marshal Montgomery, the British World War II commander. Or so "Monty" says in "Pierrepoint," a film released in England last year about the career of Albert Pierrepoint, the most famous hangman in 20th-century England, though he preferred the more decorous term "executioner."
