« He'll have to call you back | Main | Chavez lets loose » Wednesday, September 20, 2006Children and the right to counselSpeaking of the right to an attorney, the ACLU has filed a petition to the Ohio Supreme Court calling for better protection of children's right to counsel. As many as 80% of juveniles accused of crimes there waive their right to counsel, often before meeting with an attorney at all. Without an understanding of the law governing their case, many children enter guilty pleas or are quickly convicted, and end up requiring mental health care and/or special education while incarcerated. The stories of some of these kids support the ACLU's contention that a rule requiring children to at least meet with a lawyer before deciding to represent themselves is in order.
