HirschA television ad for the new Sofia Coppola film "Marie Antoinette" cross-cuts between scenes of regal privilege and revolutionary tumult. A narrator lays out the storyline: A cosseted young aristocrat is thrust into social and political circumstances beyond her understanding! Marie cries in her room. Mobs gather in the streets. Lots of shots of Versailles. Finally, the narrator intones: "Based on a true story." The founder of the core-knowledge movement in K-12 education would not be surprised that someone -- probably correctly, unfortunately -- thought that that clarification was necessary.
