Where the bloggers blog

outside.in, a venture that Steven Johnson helped to start, serves as a directory and gathering place for "placeblogs," which concern themselves, reasonably enough, with the bloggers' neighborhoods or immediate areas. In part it's a project about citizen journalism; and in part it's about the sort of feel for a place that journalism has difficulty capturing.

A recent feature on the site is an article about "America's Bloggiest Neighborhoods." The methodology here is slightly mysterious: "The results below are based on a number of variables: total number of posts, total number of local bloggers, number of comments and Technorati ranking for the bloggers."

In any case, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn (adjacent to my neighborhood), takes the top spot, and the Boston area makes the list twice. Newton is number four, and the featured blogger of the town is Kristine Munroe, monitor of The Garden City. Watertown, home to many politically active residents, is number seven. Featured blogger: Lisa Williams, who writes the cleverly named H2otown and co-founded the new site Placeblogger.com, which is working "towards an annotated world."

If your neighborhood didn't make the list you can find it by searching it on the outside.in home page, and see a lot of hubbub you might not have been aware of.
