It seems so obvious now, but Anna Gabriel, 29, never even considered filming her famous father until he invited her to. "Dad sort of asked me, `Why don't you come on tour and bring a camera?' . . . It was kind of a family thing." Family thing, indeed. Peter Gabriel also brought along his wife, Meabh Flynn, for companionship, daughter Melanie as a backup singer, and 18-month-old son Isaac for, well, amusement. Anna Gabriel's 40-minute film, "Growing Up, on Tour," screens Friday in Newport at a $500-per-person fund-raiser for the Newport Film Festival, after which the former Genesis frontman will play a rare solo show. "Dad has never played alone," said the filmmaker. "I think he just gets nervous." Although Peter Gabriel, 54, is notoriously fastidious about production, his daughter's film is exceedingly low-tech -- just her and a camera. And it may surprise fans of the quirky art rocker to see just how normal he is. "He's your typical dad," Anna Gabriel said. "Actually, it's hard to think of anything unusual about him."![]()
