Time's 'Person of the Year' is you

Time magazine named Internet users behind the self-made content on sites such as YouTube and MySpace.com as its "Person of the Year," reflecting the Web's "digital democracy." "For seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, Time's Person of the Year for 2006 is you," staff writer Lev Grossman wrote in the cover story. Time's selection was made from a list of nominees including Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, China's President Hu Jintao, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. The issue, on newsstands today, features a reflective Mylar cover that allows readers to see themselves mirrored in a computer screen above the word "you."

President Bush says he's happy for Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter, Mary, who is expecting a child with her partner, Heather Poe. In a year-end interview, the president told People magazine, "The vice president took me aside and gave me the good news. He and his wife, Lynne, are very happy for Mary." In 2005, Bush said that ideally "a child is raised in a married family with a man and a woman." Asked if he still felt that way knowing Mary and her partner, he said, "I think Mary is going to be a loving soul to her child. And I'm happy for her."

Bill Rancic, winner of the first season of Donald Trump's "The Apprentice," popped the question to E! News anchor Giuliana DePandi on Friday night -- and she said yes. "I thought I was dreaming," DePandi tells People magazine. "It was the most amazing moment of my entire life. Not only is Bill the love of my life, but he's also my best friend." DePandi, 31, and Rancic, 35, met when DePandi interviewed Rancic more than two years ago. While the pair continued to see each other at other events, it was during an interview at a Boys & Girls Club in Santa Monica 10 months ago that DePandi asked Rancic (on-camera) if he was dating anyone. He wasn't. After the cameras stopped rolling, Rancic asked her out. The couple plans to wed in late 2007 in the south of Italy, where DePandi grew up.

Not even a dragon or the world's most beloved spider could deny Will Smith a first-place finish at the box office. The father-son drama "The Pursuit of Happyness," starring Smith and his real-life son, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith, debuted as the No. 1 movie with $27 million, according to studio estimates. The dragon fantasy "Eragon " opened in second place with $23.45 million, and the children's tale "Charlotte's Web " premiered a distant third with $12 million. "Dreamgirls," starring Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy , and Jennifer Hudson in an adaptation of the stage hit, opened to big numbers at theaters in New York, Los Angeles , and San Francisco.

If former Bee Gee Barry Gibb was looking for some inspiration for the country album he plans to record, he couldn't have picked a more hallowed piece of ground to put down stakes. Gibb bought and is restoring the lakefront Nashville house belonging to the late Johnny and June Carter Cash. "It's going to be nice," Gibb said. "We'd like to use it as our second home. I would like to come here and write songs. I am planning on making a country album. That is really who I am."

Recordings of four songs by a 12-year-old girl who later became known as Judy Garland did not sell at auction yesterday when bidders failed to reach the required minimum . The two acetate records are believed to be the first made by Garland, who was born Frances Gumm. Bidding at Bonhams & Butterfields in Hollywood reached $22,500, but the recordings had been expected to fetch $30,000 to $40,000.
