Jazz picks


Tonight: Drummer, bandleader, and composer James Kamal Jones , who's played with everyone from Ornette Coleman to Roberta Flack, brings his fusion of jazz, Latin, Afro-Cuban, R&B, roots reggae, and gospel to Ryles. Burning alto saxophonist James Merenda and his Masked Marvels, featuring some of Boston's finest players, pay tribute to the music of Charles Mingus at the Acton Jazz Caf e. Texas-born multi-reed player Chuck Langford showcases his earthy and elegant sounds in a quartet at the Amazing Things Arts Center in Framingham. Bluesy bebop alto saxophone eminence Lou Donaldson completes his two-night stand with his quartet at Scullers. Sunday: The Boston-area debut of New York's acclaimed Paul Carlon Octet , featuring the leader's saxophone, flute, and gritty Ellington- and Afro-Cuban-influenced compositions, at the Lily Pad.
