Motherhood hasn't slowed Diana Krall too much. The jazz singer, pianist, and wife of Elvis Costello gave birth to twin boys in December, and now she's back on the road, in a tour that lands at the Cape Cod Melody Tent tomorrow and the
Q We have something in common.
A We do?
Q We're both parents of twin boys.
A You're kidding. Really? Oh, wow. How are they doing? How old are they?
Q They're great. They just turned 8. How are yours?
A They're so lovely. They're lovely, lovely, funny, good boys. I'm loving it. Not a lot of sleep, but I'm loving it. I'm still doing what I'm doing and still being creative and being a good mom, I hope.
Q Are they identical or fraternal?
A Fraternal. And they're completely different personalities. They're their own people.
Q Speaking of twins, have you seen the TV show "Heroes"?
A No, I don't watch much TV.
Q Ali Larter, the actress who plays Niki on the show, could be your twin sister. She looks just like you.
A Poor thing.
Q I've been seeing you in the Lexus commercial, the one with you listening to Oscar Peterson's "Night Train." Why'd you decide to do an ad?
A Because it was for the right people. Have you seen Elvis's commercial? It's really good. They let us do what we wanted. They didn't tell us what to do, didn't tell us what to say, didn't tell us what music to listen to. I didn't have to sell anything.
Q Oscar was your mentor, right?
A He still is. He is a dear, dear friend. We just saw him a few weeks ago. He held my children. It freaked me out. I never thought that one of my heroes would be holding my babies.
Q In addition to the new album, you have a song ["Dream a Little Dream of Me"] on the Ella Fitzgerald tribute album "We All Love Ella."
A I was very pregnant. I was eight months pregnant when I did that. I didn't have a lot of air.
Q Your newest album is a return to standards, something I know you love.
A I did a record with John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton , a Christmas record with [their big band]. I loved it so much I wanted to do a standards record. Now we're going to do four nights in Vegas with the big band. It's new territory for me.
Q How so?
A I have to stand out front.
Q What's different about that?
A Just standing up. Just the logistics of standing up and sitting at the piano and standing up and sitting at the piano . There are no films of Nat ["King" Cole] doing that. There's nothing on film to reference.
Q What else is going on?
A I'm working on a new album. Still picking songs. I think I may work with strings again. Ballads. I'm back to singing sad songs again. Oh well. What can you do. Not because I'm sad.
Q Are you still kicking off your concerts with Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here With You"?
A I know, I still do. I've tried a few other things, but it just doesn't fit. That song just feels good.
Q Any surprises in store for the Boston concert? A duet with Elvis maybe?
A No. [Laughs.] I guess I'm going to play some new material that hasn't been recorded. But I have a "best of" record coming out in September, which is kind of strange.
Q Why?
A I don't know. It feels weird. But it was good to go back and listen to everything, see what we've done. Where am I playing in Boston anyway?
Q At the big tent by the water that keeps changing its name. I saw Harry Connick Jr. there a few years ago, and it was rainy and cold. I'm sure that won't happen to you.
A Harry's great. I'm glad you mentioned him. I give Harry a lot of credit for my career. I heard him when he first started, someone my age who was doing music I loved and doing it very, very well. It inspired me. I thought if someone like Harry is doing it, I can do it too.
