From Sundance to Cannes: the film festival at 75

If Benito Mussolini hadn't wanted to boost off-season travel to Venice 75 years ago, who'd have heard of Park City, Utah?

What those two places have in common is, of course, famous film festivals: the Venice International and Sundance, respectively. From Anchorage to Zurich, Ann Arbor to Zlin (that's in the Czech Republic), film festivals are pretty much everywhere. Locally, the past two months have seen the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, Plymouth, Roxbury, and Rhode Island film festivals. The Boston Film Festival kicks off Sept 14. Farther afield, Telluride is going on this weekend, in Colorado, Venice runs until Saturday, and Toronto starts Thursday.

Last year, Variety's annual roundup listed 467 festivals. Will the total break 500 this year? What began as an effort to make the gondolas run on time - or at least more profitably - has become a cultural juggernaut that's as indispensable a part of the movie industry as DVD revenues and awards shows. (Cannes has a worldwide profile that must rival that of the Oscars.)

A singular blend of art and commerce, boosterism and block party, the film festival has become a cultural staple. They are to be found on every continent, except Antarctica - and with the success of ``March of the Penguins" and ``Happy Feet," expect that to change sooner rather than later.

A highly arbitrary list of the top festivals, a sweet 16, is on Page N12. Where's Montreal, you ask, or Edinburgh? What about Brussels or Buenos Aires? With festivals, as with the films they schedule, there's ultimately no accounting for taste.
