Foreman: Spector jury is at an impasse

The foreman of the jury in Phil Spector's murder trial in Los Angeles said yesterday that the panel is at an impasse, and the judge told lawyers he was considering allowing the panel to consider a lesser charge. The juror told Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler the jury was split 7 to 5, but he did not indicate which way it was leaning. The record producer is charged with second-degree murder, and the judge previously ruled that the panel would not consider lesser charges such as manslaughter. Fidler, however, told the attorneys that he was reconsidering and might instruct the jury to consider involuntary manslaughter. The judge sent the jury home with instructions to return today, possibly to have the lawyers reargue part of the case. Spector, 67, is charged in the 2003 shooting of actress Lana Clarkson, 40. (AP)

Pavarotti leaves estate to 2d wife, daughters
Luciano Pavarotti left half his estate to his second wife and half to his four daughters, including three from his first marriage, an attorney said yesterday. In the final months of his yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer, Pavarotti made two wills, said attorney Giorgio Bernini, who represents the singer's second wife. One dated June 13 divides up his assets according to Italian law, with half going to his wife, Nicoletta Mantovani, and half to his children. The second, dated July 29, elaborates on the first and concerns the tenor's US holdings, which he entrusted to Mantovani, Bernini said. Interest in Pavarotti's will has mounted since his Sept. 6 death at age 71 amid reports that his three adult daughters from his first marriage were squabbling with Mantovani, and that there had been a "crisis" in their marriage.
