Weekend Wreaths
By Jill Connors, 11/9/2003
The shopping and preparation stages for making these natural wreaths will demand more time than the actual assembly. Still, the whole project can easily be done in a weekend. Even better, all of the wreaths can be made for less than $20 and require only beginner-level skills.
Materials like wire or styrofoam forms, hot-glue guns, florist's wire, satin ribbon, Spanish moss, dried rose hips, and lepidium can all be found at major crafts stores such as Michael's (www.michaels.com for store locator or 800-642-4235). Fresh bay, which is sold by the branch, will require a trip to the florist; wild rose hips can be gathered outdoors. Dried cotton pods are available through Atlantic Spice Co. of North Truro (www.atlanticspice.com or 800-316-7965).
To fashion the wreaths, start with wire or foam forms. Stuff a wire form with Spanish moss. This creates a background, hides the wire, and gives the wreath a more finished look even if viewed from the back. Wrapping a styrofoam form with satin ribbon serves a similar function. When the form is completely wrapped with ribbon, use the end piece to make a loop for hanging. Cut the end of the ribbon and glue it to the form.
Attach dried plant material to wire forms with florist's wire cut into pieces using wire cutters. (Don't use scissors; the wire will dull them quickly.) With most materials, it is best to make small bundles with the wire and attach those to the frame by threading the wire through the form, not just around it. This will keep pieces from slipping.
To decorate foam frames, attach materials with a glue gun. The most common mistake beginners make is applying too much glue. Just a dab on the item being glued and on the surface to which it will be adhered should suffice.
In addition to the examples shown on Pages 40 and 41, wreaths can be made from any number of dried plants or flowers. Just browse the crafts stores, florist shops, or the woods near your home for whatever pleases your eye.
