Pushing Buttons

Big fasteners are popping up on fall's coats and sweaters.

WHAT'S IN Hot button issues aren't just for politicians. They're a major topic of conversation in fashion circles as well. How big? Buttons the size of doorknobs make a bold statement on women's coats, jackets, and sweaters, either covered in matching fabric or attached with pretty threads or ribbons. Many serve no purpose other than playful decoration, concealing functional snap closures underneath. Also right on the button for fall are hooded duffel coats, with handsome wood or horn toggles for men and shiny metal ones for women.

HOW TO WEAR IT Update last year's coat by switching to larger or more interesting buttons. Just remember, the holes have to accommodate the new size. Or add a political button or two. But avoid too much of a good thing. A double-breasted coat over a jacket with saucer-sized fasteners will look too busy and bulky.
