DEAD ON
My husband and I were discussing with our children what we should do for the day. My husband mentioned canoeing, since our house is located near Dudley Pond in Wayland. Our 6-year-old son had another idea: "Let's all go down to the pond and see the dead fish." Surprised, I asked where he had gotten that idea. "Why do you think it's called Deadly Pond?" he asked.

HOW DO YOU GET TO CARNEGIE HALL?
Being well aware of the poor reputation Boston drivers have, I was filled with gratitude when, on two different occasions, locals went out of their way to help me. The first time, I found myself lost in Hyde Park while trying to get to Milton Hospital and stopped at a gas station to ask for directions. A customer hopped in his green Taurus and told me to follow him, saying, "You'll never get there on your own." The second time, I got separated from an ambulance I was following to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Again I stopped at a gas station, where a cab driver did the same thing. Needless to say, I followed both times.

A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE
Foreign students who use the Winthrop Public Library often come in wearing the jerseys of their favorite soccer teams. I work at the circulation desk, and I have suggested that to get the full Boston experience, they should visit Fenway Park to see the region's beloved Red Sox. One day, two Irish students came up sporting new Red Sox T-shirts and caps. They had managed to get tickets. "We cheered, we did the wave, we drank beer. We had no idea what was going on on the field, but it was really fun!"
