Memorable Shot

The recent death of Red Auerbach brought back a fond memory. When my husband and I were dating in the '70s, he invited me to a Celtics game. After we got to our seats, he turned around and pointed to a gentleman four rows behind us. "That's Red Auerbach," he said. Since Mr. Auerbach caught him pointing, my date yelled out, "Mr. Auerbach, say hello to my girlfriend!" Mortified, I gave a wave and slunk down in my seat. Later, on my way back from the concession stand, Mr. Auerbach tapped my arm and asked, "Is that really your boyfriend?" When I responded yes, he said, "Oh well, you can't win 'em all!" We both shared a laugh.

FINALLY THERE

My son and I were sitting in the admissions office recently at Phillips Academy in Andover, anxiously awaiting our turn for an interview. As people came and went, one couple was speaking with the secretary about all the traffic they encountered on their drive that afternoon and how it almost made them late. "That's too bad," she said. "How long did it take you to get here?" The father replied, "Oh, about 14 years."
