Get Going
TRAFFIC ON NEW ENGLAND'S major highways is a given, but that doesn't mean the region is devoid of beautiful, relaxing, or thrilling drives. Here are a few of our favorites. Just don't all rush out there at once.
* New England safari Glimpse moose dipping their heads in gurgling creeks along the peaceful Kancamagus Scenic Byway (Route 112) in New Hampshire. The 34.5-mile drive stretches from Conway to Lincoln and is almost entirely within the White Mountain National Forest. Scenic overlooks give views of river gorges and foliage.
* Pastoral splendor Vermont's Route 4 to Route 12, Quechee through Barnard, is a drive for all seasons. It will take you past rolling green hills, pastures dotted with cows, lovely Quechee Gorge (above), and eclectic shops. Grab a sandwich at the Barnard General Store, then dip your toes in Silver Lake across the street.
* Seascapes with a twist Take Shore Road from York Beach north to Kennebunkport in Maine. You'll have stunning sea views, but keep your eyes on this curvy road. For anyone who enjoys a challenging drive, this is a good bet. The lobster rolls awaiting you in Kennebunkport might tempt you to goose the gas. Resist.
* Picnic perfect Windows down, the salty air and whiff of farmland whoosh into the car as you cruise Hixbridge Road in Westport to Adamsville Road to Route 179 to Tiverton Four Corners in Rhode Island (it's all continuous). Make a pit stop at the Milk and Honey Bazaar for a picnic basket, then head south on Route 77 to Sakonnet Vineyards. Relax on the grounds there or nose around the side roads for ocean views. Some of these quiet straight-aways seem made for speed, but the area's beauty slows you down. ![]()
