The back story of the comic The 99 is that in 1258, when the Mongol leader Hulegu Khan invaded Baghdad - that's where the historical facts end - the city's scholars foresaw the destruction of their library and transmuted the knowledge from all of their books into 99 magical gemstones. The gemstones were subsequently scattered across the earth. Centuries later, 99 people around the globe found them, and each gained a unique superpower. The US version of the story features two new American heroes: Aleem, a boy from Los Angeles whose gemstone allows him to look into the future, and Darr, whose stone is supposed to have healing powers but instead enables him to cause pain in others. In this excerpt from the first US version of The 99, a scholar of the gemstones legend has just revealed he believes the story to be true. Events in Saudi Arabia are about to prove him correct.
