In late 2003, Bren Bataclan, an unemployed graphic designer, left 30 canvases of grinning characters around the city with a note: "This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people more often." By last summer, Boston embraced the Smile Project. Now, two hospitals have commissioned the artist and stores sell his paintings.
