T. Smith, Nixon science panelist

PINE LAKE, Wis. -- Thomas S. Smith, who was named in 1972 to the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science, died Wednesday in his home of cancer, Lawrence University officials announced. He was 83.

Mr. Smith headed Lawrence University from 1969 until his retirement in 1979.

He won an appointment by then-Gov. Patrick Lucey in 1973 as chairman of the newly-created state Ethics Board.

President Nixon named him to the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science, the awards selection committee for distinguished contributions in the sciences.

Mr. Smith earned a doctoral degree in physics at Ohio State University.
