Howard Leavy, former editor

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Former Brunswick News editor and president C. H. Howard Leavy III died Thursday. He was 68.

Mr. Leavy was the third generation of his family to publish The Brunswick News since its founding in 1902. He retired after 34 years with the newspaper in 1999, when his sons took over the leadership.

Mr. Leavy started as a credit manager, worked in classified advertising, and reported on town hall meetings before assuming the top position at the paper in 1983, the year his father died.

Mr. Leavy oversaw a major upgrade in printing technology at the paper in 1974 and moved the newspaper plant from its longtime location in downtown Brunswick.
