Geoff William Reilly earned his living by his physical strength, but he was known for his gentle spirit, especially around children.
''He was a real gentle person who had this exceptional ability to relate to children," said his mother, Gretchen Augat Reilly. ''Children loved him. He had a tender and fun-loving way with them."
Mr. Reilly, 30, a personal fitness trainer who was born and raised in Attleboro, died Oct. 1 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis of sudden cardiac arrest.
Mr. Reilly had recently moved back to New England from Newport Beach, Calif., where he spent the last four years working as a fitness trainer. ''He loved New England, " his mother said.
Mr. Reilly graduated from St. Andrew's School in Barrington, R.I., and attended New England College in Henniker, N.H., before moving to California.
Growing up, Mr. Reilly played soccer and baseball, but skiing was his true passion. ''It was really what he was best at," his mother said.
An avid fan of movies and sports, Mr. Reilly also enjoyed golf, gardening, and carpentry.
His mother said she only realized after his death how many people he had touched.
''There has been a tremendous outpouring of caring and friendship," she said. ''I am amazed at how many friends have actually come to me to pay their respects."
Aside from his mother, Mr. Reilly is survived by his brother, Sean Reilly of Hyannis; his sister, Taylor Reilly Joyce of Cotuit; and his girlfriend, Mindy Mayes.
A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. in First Congregational Church in Falmouth.![]()
