Pauline Gagnon, widow of Iwo Jima icon

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Pauline Gagnon, widow of one of the six Marines immortalized in the Iwo Jima flag raising of World War II, died Monday at Catholic Medical Center. She was 80.

Rene Gagnon, who died in 1979, was one of the Iwo Jima flag holders immortalized in the 1945 Associated Press photograph by Joe Rosenthal that came to symbolize the Marine Corps and Allied victory over Japan.

The Gagnons had owned and operated Jubilee Travel Agency for 25 years.

Mrs. Gagnon, a Pembroke native, lived most of her life in Hooksett before recently moving to Manchester.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St. Joseph Cathedral. Burial will be Thursday next to her husband in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
