John Adams Paine

John Adams Paine, a World War II veteran and a former hockey player at Harvard University, died Sunday of congestive heart failure at Mary Ann Morse Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Natick. He was 85. Born in West Newton, Mr. Paine attended Harvard University, where he played varsity hockey for three years and was team captain for the 1942-43 season. He graduated in 1943 and joined the Navy, where he was a lieutenant. He was stationed in Panama, where he worked as a meteorologist. After finishing his military service, Mr. Paine began working as an investment banker in 1946. He retired in 1998, the same year he was inducted into the Harvard Varsity Club Hall of Fame for hockey. Mr. Paine was an avid golfer, played on the curling team for The Country Club in Brookline, and served on the Weston Planning Board. He leaves his wife, Jane (Patterson) of Weston; daughters Mary Caron of Conway and Elizabeth Bell of Wayland; sons David Adams of Northampton and Alexander Taylor of Acton; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. His son Peter died in 1948. A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. in First Parish Church in Weston.

David Ganong

Dr. David Ganong of Vineyard Haven, a Vietnam veteran and dentist who practiced holistic dentistry in Massachusetts for 30 years, died of a heart attack April 20 at his home in Martha's Vineyard. He was 61. Born in Needham, Dr. Ganong, who opposed the use of mercury in fillings, started his own dental practice in the early 1970s in Scituate and Hanover, where he treated patients from the South Shore and Martha's Vineyard. Dr. Ganong leaves his wife, Jennifer; daughters Angelique of Vineyard Haven, Alyssa of Breckenridge, Colo., Jessica Genrich of Bar Harbor, Maine, and Amanda of Washington, D.C.; a son, David of Texas; stepsons Robert Murrin of Boston and Jake Murrin of Chicago; a brother, Harvey of Baton Rouge, La.; sisters Sally Pope of New York, Phyllis Petrillo of Kennett Square, Pa., and Jeannette Echenique of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs. Burial will take place at a later date.

Avram, Henriette D. -- In Miami, April 22, at 86. Her work at the Library of Congress replaced ink-on-paper card catalogs and revolutionized cataloging systems at libraries worldwide.
