The sounds of the Earth

MIT seismologist John Bullitt worked tirelessly to make the internal vibrations of the earth audible to the human ear. Listen to a couple of samples below.

Summer evening crickets, slowed down to one-quarter speed. At this speed, each chirp unfolds into a delicately shaped sequence of four pulsed notes.





The sounds of Earth, sped up 10,000 times. Each "chirp" is the sound of seismic waves traveling through the Earth's crust from distant earthquakes.
