Most supermarkets carry several brands of gluten-free mixes. This is a random sampling. Most of these mixes exceeded expectation in flavor, texture, and mouth appeal.

Stop & Shop

Pamela’s Products Chocolate Brownie Mix ($5.95) comes with chocolate chunks. You add an egg, butter, and oil. This makes dense and very chocolatey brownies; for bittersweet chocolate lovers only.

Shaw’s

Betty Crocker Gluten Free Cookie Mix ($4.49) comes with semisweet chocolate chips. You add butter, an egg, and vanilla. It makes sweet and flavorful cookies, but rice flour gives them a gritty texture.

Lieber’s Moist & Simple Yellow Cake ($4.29), which is kosher, needs eggs and oil and makes a very sweet, moist layer cake with a good flavor.

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Hearty Whole Grain Bread Mix ($4.99) produces one large, dark, flavorful, and satisfying loaf that will appeal to lovers of coarse European breads. Some of the ingredients are buckwheat, garbanzo beans, sunflower and sesame seeds, and sorghum flour. You add eggs, oil, and cider vinegar. Slice the bread thinly to use for open-faced sandwiches.

Gluten-Free Pantry Yankee Cornbread & Muffin Mix ($4.49). Turn this into muffins with buttermilk, sugar, an egg, and butter. Eat warm right from the oven and you’ll be pleased.

Whole Foods Market

Simply Organic Banana Bread Mix ($4.99) makes one small, moist loaf. You add ripe bananas and an egg. This is a brown-rice flour mix that tastes suprisingly non-gritty.

Roche Bros. and Sudbury Farms

The Really Great Food Company Classic Pancake Mix ($6.99) makes fluffy pancakes with crispy edges. Add eggs, oil, milk, and blueberries.
