Licensing board disciplines four doctors
By Liz Kowalczyk, Globe Staff
The state Board of Registration in Medicine today revoked the medical license of Dr. Rimas Maurukas, an internist and pulmonologist with a private practice in Harvard, for providing poor care to 13 patients, including giving them high doses of narcotics while failing to refer them to pain specialists or for rehabilitation. Maurukas had entered into a voluntary agreement not to practice a year ago.
The board also entered into a probation agreement with Dr. John George, an internist in Dartmouth affiliated with South Coast Hospital Group, for engaging in inappropriate behavior with two female patients. He must use a board-approved chaperone for all exams of female patients.
The board reprimanded Dr. Boris Murillo, an internist and pulmonologist at Berkshire Medical Center, and fined him $2,500, for improperly looking at the medical records of two individuals for no legitimate medical reason.
Also reprimanded was Dr. Paul Silverstein, a urologist in Pittsfield. The board found that on several occasions, Silverstein used profanity and inappropriate language to colleagues and a patient. He has since sought treatment and education to address conflict management.
