Elder care: The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital have won recognition and grant funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation for a joint program to train junior faculty and fellows in geriatrics.

The medical school was one of three designated this month as centers of excellence in geriatric medicine and training. The other new centers are at the University of Wisconsin and Wake Forest University. Boston University, Harvard and Yale are among the 24 Hartford centers previously named.

Rhode Island Hospital received $450,000 from the philanthropy, which focuses on aging and health.

Ig Nobels (and other stuff) online: The Annals of Improbable Research, known for its annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremonies, is moving online after 13 years on paper.

The magazine, whose 50 editors -- including 10 real Nobelists -- scour 20,000 scientific journals for unusual studies and also publish original articles and satire, will be free. A high-resolution downloadable version will cost $5. The print version of the magazine, which appears six times a year, will continue to be sold for $35 to subscribers.
