Today's Globe: Calif. research lesson, girls' drug use

After three years, the slow rate of progress serves as a reality check for Massachusetts and other states that have followed California's lead by placing big bets on medical research. Later this month, Massachusetts lawmakers are expected to vote on Governor Deval Patrick's $1 billion life sciences initiative, which is primarily targeted for research.

Teenage girls now equal or outpace teenage boys in alcohol consumption, drug use, and smoking, national surveys show.
