In case you missed it

In the Sunday Globe:

paul%20farmer%20in%20rwanda%20150.bmpDr. Paul Farmer (left) has brought his world-renowned Partners in Health model to Rwanda, which is still feeling the aftershocks of genocide a decade earlier. Farmer, a Harvard professor who each fall teaches undergraduates and medical students about global health issues and infectious disease, has moved with his family to Rwanda, where he recently became a citizen and a member of the Rwandan Medical Society.

jerome%20grossman%20150.bmpWith a forceful vigor that made him a key player in Boston's medical community, Dr. Jerome H. Grossman (left) led New England Medical Center for 16 years and spent the past decade at the Harvard Kennedy School, delving into the ills of the national healthcare industry. Dr. Grossman died of cancer April 1 at his home in the Back Bay. He was 68 and had cowritten a forthcoming book, "An Innovative Prescription," that will now be a valedictory of sorts for his 42-year career in Boston as a physician, administrator, and thinker.

On the wire:

At least 23 people in 14 states -- including two in Massachusetts -- have been sickened by the same strain of salmonella found in two breakfast cereals recalled by Malt-O-Meal, the federal Food and Drug Administration said Saturday.

On the blogs:

Dr. Daniel Carlat says he's had it. No more drug reps in his office, he writes on The Carlat Psychiatry Blog. Given his stance on pharmaceutical companies' entanglements with doctors, it's somewhat surprising that he still entertained drug sales visits. And that sales reps kept calling on him.

On Healthy Children, Dr. Steven Parker of Boston Medical Center says he still has nightmares about a mistaken dose given by an intern he supervised. He writes about how providers and parents can minimize medication errors in the hospital.

Dr. Joe Wright, an intern at a Boston hospital, blogs on Hemodyamics about a Kaiser Permanente doctor's "brilliant" plan to have farmer's markets hosted at medical centers.
