Beth Israel Deaconess links to Google Health

Posted by Elizabeth Cooney May 19, 2008 07:36 PM

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has joined forces with Google to expand its online patient portal, allowing the secure exchange of medical information beyond its walls, the hospital and search-engine giant announced today.

About 40,000 Beth Israel Deaconess patients and 1,000 clinicians already use the hospital's PatientSite to gain access to medical records, e-mail doctors, make appointments, renew prescriptions, and request referrals. Google Health accounts will allow users to store information and share it with doctors, labs, pharmacies, and other healthcare providers outside the hospital's system.

Google's other partners in the Google Health venture include Walgreen Co., CVS Caremark Group, Quest Daignostics, and the Cleveland Clinic.

Beth Israel Deaconess chief information officer Dr. John J. Halamka is part of the Google Health Advisory Council.
