MGH to increase AIDS efforts in Africa

Posted by Elizabeth Cooney July 31, 2008 11:51 AM

Massachusetts General Hospital will use an $8.5 million grant to expand its clinical and research work against HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Funded by a gift from Mark and Lisa Schwartz of New York, the hospital will set up an academic and research center in Uganda and support broader outreach programs and research in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, a province called the epicenter of the epidemic.

The grant will also support the work in Uganda of Dr. David Bangsberg, who recently joined Mass. General from the University of California, San Francisco. He has been studying how well HIV treatments work and will be developing a program to help local leaders recruit and train healthcare workers.
