Cape doctor's license suspended after drug arrest

A Cape Cod specialist in substance-abuse treatment who was arrested for cultivating marijuana in his home has had his license suspended indefinitely.

The state Board of Registration in Medicine took the action Wedesday against Dr. Alfredo I. Gonzalez of Falmouth. He had agreed not to practice medicine after his arrest last year. If he abstains from substance abuse for a year, the board said in a statement, his suspension can be stayed.

Arrested in September after police responded to a burglar alarm at his home and found seven marijuana plants in his basement, Gonzalez later pleaded guilty to drug charges without admitting to the facts. His case was later dismissed.

According to the Cape Cod Times, Gonzalez practiced at Bourne Internal Medicine and was director of inpatient treatment services at High Point Treatment Center in Plymouth, which treats people with substance abuse problems.
