Today's Globe: skin cancer's other risks; nuts, popcorn, and colon ills; lead rules; Byetta deaths

People who have had a normally nonfatal form of skin cancer have double the risk of developing other types of cancers, US researchers said yesterday.

Contrary to popular belief and common medical advice, eating seeds, nuts, corn, and popcorn does not cause the bowel disease diverticulosis or its painful complications, researchers said yesterday.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has withdrawn regulations that would have severely limited lead in children's jewelry following federal action that will create nationwide standards restricting lead in all children's products.

Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. reported four new deaths in patients taking Byetta, even as the companies tried to shore up the safety profile of their diabetes medication (sixth item).
