Swine flu closes 2 more Boston schools
By Stephen Smith, Globe Staff
Boston public school authorities this afternoon decided to temporarily suspend classes at two more schools because of outbreaks of fevers and coughs suspected to be caused by swine flu.
The John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science in Roxbury and the James Condon Elementary School in South Boston will be closed starting Wednesday and reopen June 3.
The O'Bryant school has more than 1,200 students in the seventh through 12th grades, while Condon has 700 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. A significant number of students from both schools were reported as being ill today, according to the Boston Public schools.
Three Boston schools were shuttered last week -- Boston Latin School, Umana Middle School Academy, and Frederick Middle School -- because of flu outbreaks. Latin reopens tomorrow, while Umana is scheduled to resume classes Thursday and Frederick on Friday.

CLOSE BOSTON LATIN ACADEMY TOO!
Why isn't Boston Latin Academy closed when it's been confirmed to also have the H1N1 virus?!?!?!
I go to east boston. High school and there are at least 3 people with it at school
Why haven't they closed it down yet
Boston public school officials only decided to close the schools when they found out they would not have to make up the school days at the end of the year. Latin stayed open because they realize closing the school is unnecessary and they actually want the kids to get a good education.
why isnt latin academy closed we have confirmed cases of swine..and many kids coughing and sneezing spreading the flu.....personally i think the headmaster is a tad bit slow!
i think you should all stop crying and go to school. just avoid the swiney people. its so simpo.
wimps.
i think they make teenager size bubbles... maybe you each need to get one.
stop crying and go to school.
Oh my, the flu! Seriously, get over it. If you don't want to get sick, take care of yourselves.
latin academy has confirmed cases of swine flu, and they are not closing down the school. As usual they are gonna wait until its too late, when dozens of student have the swine flu before they close the school. Common sense would be to close it now to prevent further outbreaks.
Boston public schools need to close this early and not have to make it up just to be safe for all that is concerned, to many cases and possibly some we havn.'t yet to hear about. How are children going to learn when each day they are getting more and more afraid of getting sick
Is it true that if two more schools close, then school is done for the year?
Boston Latin Academy has at least one confirmed case. The school has decided not to close, but they should at least hand out masks to students and staff. Several students have been coughing around the building and several staff members are suffering "flue-like" symptoms.
Actually, Boston Latin Academy has 12 confirmed cases but we didn't even get to close down and they did hand out masks only at the main office. It wasn't mandatory for everyone to get one, unfortunately.
Latin Academy NEEDS to close. Over 220 kids were absent from school today and the ones that stayed in school were coughing and sneezing all throughout the day. Dozens of kids were sent to the nurse sick. We understand that our students need to receive a regular education but this situation is effecting us all and going out of control. They should at least past out masks to us staffs and students and open up the windows in all classrooms.
Over 200 students were absent from Boston Latin Academy today, due to swine flu and related symptons. the school should be closed for a 7 day period until it is cleaned and made safe for students and faculty alike, just as BLS, Obryant and many other schools in the districts are doing.
Madison Park should also close do to the fact that it is only seperated by a door way to O'Bryant. Plus the Music for Madison is building is on the opposet side of the O'Bryant. Also some of the students cut through O'Bryant to get into Madison.
Boston Latin Academy should be one of the schools closing down. yes it is flu like symptoms and yes there are more than 1 confirmed cases of the N1H1 flu.
allegedly more than 280 people were not in school. and more than 50 went home yesterday. the people who say we need to step it up and get over it probably have not gone in the school. there is one teacher with the swine. no masks. 22 teachers were absent today, and everyone is coughing and sneezing. I have no idea what it will take for our school to close. maybe parents need to beging and take action !
Everyone is getting all worked up about closing down the schools. But as a student, and a senior at that, I'm not excited at all to have had my school closed. The schools closing pushes back our sign out day and forfeits all of our schelduled sports and activities. I would rather be in school, besides, there is nothing to do in the mornings while we're supposed to be in school anyways. It makes no sense to close our school now, when seniors are so close to getting out. Call me selfish if you want, but I don't approve my schools closing.
close Boston Latin Academy!!!! We have people with the H1N1, but yet the principle wont close the school? It will be on her hands if theres a victim in this.
How is it that Boston Latin Academy is still open. We have upwards of 10 students with swine flu, a large percentage of the students and faculty have called in sick and today we had a teacher pass out and be hospitalized due to swine flu. Why are people waiting for it to get worse and spread after we have already had a student die of the normal flu earlier this year? Someone needs to wake up and shut us down now before more kids get sick.
BPS students are out of school more than they are in.
The flu is just another excuse to take a day or weeks off WITH pay.
how is it fair that boston area schools do not have to make up the school days when we had to in central mass due to the ice storm? .we could not have gone to school if we wanted to! our schools served as shelters with the national guard based there. homes had no electricity for weeks in some cases and the commissioner of education said that there are no waivers...no matter what. 180 days for ALL. we had to go to school during our feb and apr vacations and are going to school until the 27th of june! inconvenienced by vacation plans? so were we! more serious a situation? it has been proved that it is no worse than the normal "flu". you can go to school until june 30th-that's the end of the fiscal year-please enlighten!
is the boston high school england , still closed after the 6 weeks off due to swine flu????. and is tower road closed also at the same time ?????
