A former head of the state's medical board will lead a national organization of medical regulators.

Dr. Martin Crane, who was a member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine from 2000 to 2008, including five years as chair, has become chair of the Federation of State Medical Boards. He was elected at the group's annual meeting in Virginia, it said in a statement today.

An obstetrician/gynecologist, Crane graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. He trained in surgery at the University of Colorado Medical Center and did his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Boston Hospital for Women, which later became part of Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is a commander in the Medical Corps of the US Navy Reserves.
