How many calories in that latte? There's an app for that
The Boston doctor behind CelebrityDiagnosis.com has launched a calorie counter for the smart phone era: an application for your iPhone that tells you the nutritional value of your food after you snap a photo of it.Dr. Mark Boguski, an associate professor in the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and a pathologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, developed PhotoCalorie with Vincent Fusaro, also of the Harvard bioinformatics center; Larry Istrail, a graduate student at Boston University; and Adam Marcus, a graduate student at MIT.
The app, which is free at Apple's iTunes store, is intended to make keeping a food diary easier by calculating calories and nutritional content, and then creating daily summaries based on the photo and a brief description of the snack or meal. It works by matching the photo and description to entries in a nutrition database, which, in true Web 2.0 fashion, is designed to expand with more users entering more foods via the new app.
Boguski said CelebrityDiagnosis.com, its companion web site ResoundingHealth.com, and PhotoCalorie have one goal in common: using new media to raise health awareness and increase medical knowledge. He is the founder of Resounding Health Inc.
