Tomatoes, Swiss chard, jalapeños, and other vegetables are sprouting on college campuses across the state — ready for harvesting this fall as part of a new student movement to promote sustainable agriculture and healthy eating.

A cost-cutting push unveiled Friday by the Swiss drug maker Roche Holding AG, which last year paid $46.8 billion for the US biotechnology giant Genentech Inc., has raised fresh questions about the fate of Genzyme Corp., a Cambridge biotech.

Joan Wheeler, a pediatric nurse who was as an avid supporter of the arts, education, environmental conservation, and social services, died at home in Weston on Aug. 10 after a brief illness. She was 85.
