Kennedy's One Mind for Research: Globe reporter Bella English tells the story of Patrick Kennedy's new passion: raising money for brain research. Kennedy co-founded One Mind for Research, with the goal of raising $1.5 billion in private philanthropy and federal funding over 10 years to support study of the brain and convene scientists and policymakers. Kennedy said he has had a long interest in his family's DNA and history of neurological disorders, and he plans to make supporting brain research his life's work.
Listen to Nurse Louise: Laura Landro of the Wall Street Journal writes this column about efforts to control hospital readmissions, which account for about $1 of every $10 spent on hospital care. She highlights Boston Medical Center's Project RED and their virtual nurse Louise, who teaches patients what they need to know after discharge about follow-up care and medications.
State exchanges: Of course Massachusetts, with the Health Connector, is way ahead on this issue. But Amy Goldstein of the Associated Press reports that fewer than one-fourth of states have begun creating a health exchange, which the Affordable Care Act requires they have in place by 2014. If they can't prove by January 2013 that they will be ready, the federal government will step in and create the exchange for them.
Night doctor: Kaiser Health News and The Washington Post report on a trend of hospitals hiring "nocturnists" to treat patients at night. Some studies have shown poorer outcomes for patients who are admitted at night, when there are fewer nurses and doctors in the hospital. The trend is in part a reaction to stricter rules on working hours for interns and residents and a push to improve overall hospital safety, reporter Sandra G. Boodman writes.
