It was bizarre, to be sure, when several people reported hearing an explosion in Mission Hill Monday night. It turned out to be an aggressive two-alarm fire on the roof deck of an apartment building.
There’s often a lot of confusion in the early moments of a big fire or emergency. But it takes a special kind of mind to jump from “Some people heard an explosion’’ and “Is there a fire?’’ to “Oh my God, the terrorists are attacking us.’’
Some Twitter users were ready to make that leap:
“@ThisRiddle: Building in Boston is said to have "Outright Exploded".” I hope it's not linked to Isis.— Matt Carrier (@Mjc_7) July 1, 2014
Thankfully, Boston’s twitterverse is also full of level-headed people who swatted back the speculation.
If you believed Twitter Boston just got hit by a terrorist attack. "Huge explosion" actually a roof fire, now out.— Jules Mattsson (@julesmattsson) July 1, 2014
the explosion in Boston is probably not a terrorist attack. I laugh when I read tweets of idiots suggesting it.— Mike (@MK_768) July 1, 2014
yeah...it wasn't ISIS who attacked Boston tonight lmfao. Most likely a gas explosion. Gees people are crazy these days.— Mike (@MK_768) July 1, 2014
